‘Lowlands’ Susan Philipsz, 2010

Another aspect of vocal manipulation, we see here the winner of the turner prize 2010, Susan Philpsz’ ‘Lowlands’. The piece is simple, it is a sea shanty sung by the artist, which has been manipulated so that you cannot discern the words, but can discern the melodies of the song. It is an incredibly beautiful piece, and very haunting, not with the same level of magnitude that Alvin Lucier’s piece has, but demonstrating a great understanding of the techniques used to manipulate and create new sounds that we have not heard before. I will take this into account when crafting my piece.
