As I sat in the studio the other day, moulding the clay between my hands and observing the way the soft flesh changed and morphed against my own, A thought was sparked within my head: ‘Why don’t I create something that is human, but distorted in some way? Utilising this clay, much like the painting on the wall?’
Of course, I got stuck in, and this is the finished outcome. I like it, but I believe I added far too much clay to the canvas. There is a need for subtlety here, for some form of delicacy in the work. I would like to use the clay much gentler, much like a watercolour piece. I may experiment with peeling the clay back off the piece much more, possibly with a knife, in order to gain a ‘relief’ of the form, so to speak. Could I utilise my own face to create an imprint?
